The Darkness Returns: BCA Goes Back to Barrel King
The Bourbon Club of Arkansas returned to Barrel King for a second major custom blending project with a goal that was simple to describe and much harder to accomplish: create a new bourbon that could stand on its own rather than repeat what we had already done.
The finished whiskey is Dark Matter, a project that was also known during development as Darkness 2. It combines whiskey from MGP, O.Z. Tyler, Green River and Wild Turkey in a seven-component blend spanning 8 to 13 years of age.
For BCA, this project became more than a follow-up release. Justin Mills and Gary Penna represented the club at the 2026 Barrel King Bourbon Games, and Dark Matter ultimately emerged carrying the distinction that now sits at the center of the story: 2026 Bourbon Games Champion.

The final Dark Matter recipe totals exactly 100%. It combines seven components across five different ages, with major contributions from MGP, O.Z. Tyler and Green River plus two deliberately tiny 0.5% additions.

Four Whiskey Sources, Seven Components
Dark Matter is not built around one dominant barrel with a few token additions. Its identity comes from meaningful portions of several whiskey sources working together.
- O.Z. Tyler — 45% of the final blend: 27% 8-year and 18% 13-year whiskey.
- MGP — 27.5%: 27% 13-year MGP plus 0.5% 12-year MGP finished in a Stagg barrel.
- Green River — 27%: 13% 10-year and 14% 9-year whiskey.
- Wild Turkey — 0.5%: a 12-year component used as one of the final small adjustments.
That distribution is what separates Dark Matter from a traditional single-barrel selection. The finished bourbon has to become something none of the individual components could be on its own.
MGP: 13-Year Bourbon Plus a Stagg-Barrel Finish
13-year MGP makes up 27% of Dark Matter, tying the 8-year O.Z. Tyler component as the largest individual piece of the recipe.
The blend also includes 0.5% 12-year MGP finished in a Stagg barrel. It is a tiny portion by volume, but it survived the blending process because the final whiskey was better with it in the recipe.
O.Z. Tyler: The Largest Combined Share of Dark Matter
O.Z. Tyler contributes 45% of the finished blend, making it the largest source by total percentage.

Using both ages allowed the blend to draw from two different points of maturity instead of relying entirely on the oldest whiskey available.
Green River: 27% of the Final Blend
Green River contributes another 27% of Dark Matter.

The near-even split between 9- and 10-year Green River adds another maturity layer to a whiskey that already spans 8, 12 and 13 years.
Wild Turkey: Only 0.5%, but Still Part of the Recipe
The final 0.5% of Dark Matter comes from 12-year Wild Turkey.
Half of one percent can look insignificant on a spreadsheet. In a blend, however, the question is not whether the component announces itself independently. The question is whether removing it changes the finished whiskey.
Why Does 0.5% Matter in a Bourbon Blend?
Two lines in the Dark Matter recipe immediately stand out: 0.5% 12-year MGP finished in a Stagg barrel and 0.5% 12-year Wild Turkey.
Those components serve a different purpose from the 13%, 18% and 27% portions that establish the structure of the whiskey. Once the larger pieces are in place, tiny additions can act more like final adjustments than foundational ingredients.
The point is not necessarily to taste one of those 0.5% components separately. If the finished blend changes when it is removed, then it matters.

For Justin Mills and Gary Penna, the championship became central to the identity of Dark Matter. The blend was not assembled simply to become another private release; its development was tied directly to BCA’s participation in the Barrel King Bourbon Games.
A traditional barrel pick asks which barrel is best. A custom blend asks a different question: what can we build from the whiskey in front of us? Dark Matter is the answer BCA brought home from the 2026 Bourbon Games.

Why This Project Was Called “Darkness 2”
Inside BCA, the project became known as Darkness 2 because it continued the club’s earlier Barrel King blending work. The connection matters, but this whiskey is not simply another batch of the original blend.
The component recipe is different. The ages are different. The Bourbon Games championship is part of the story. And the final identity became Dark Matter with the tagline “The Darkness Returns.”
The name fits the blending concept: several distinct components pulled together into a whiskey whose identity comes from the whole rather than any single barrel.
